Surf Milfontes Our History

When it all started, in 2003, our intention was for it to be a project aimed at young people in the region … We are the first Surf School in Vila Nova de Milfontes and one of the oldest in Southwest Alentejo. We stand out, above all, for having made known a modality that was practically nonexistent before.

We feel, therefore, privileged to be inserted in a peaceful location, of genuine people and with a strong spirit of mutual aid. And that is perhaps the reason why we strive daily to involve the local community in projects of which we are part. We speak, for example, of practices to raise awareness and preserve the natural environment.

We also want to promote the interest of young people in the Vila Nova de Milfontes area for a sport that highlights not only the potential of the place where they live, but also motivates new friendships. And, best of all, it encourages the sharing of knowledge and experiences at the same time.

Vision

We believe that diversity is an intrinsic characteristic of any sport. For this reason, we try to organize our Surf lessons so that any student feels comfortable, regardless of their level of experience.

Our team has been surfing for many years and that’s why we can understand that this sport can be interpreted in two different ways:

A modality that is practiced in an individualistic way
An activity that is practiced in a team

It is a sport where the difficulties of some may well be overcome through the experience and help of others. We are all a team here and no one is left behind. Never!

Thus, it is crucial that we share with the students the essence behind this sport that involves a very strong technical component. But that’s not all!

One of the things we love most about Surf is that it quickly becomes a lifestyle, where communion with Nature and permanent contact with the Sea teach us to value who we are and where we want to go.

Values

Ensuring that SAFETY is at the basis of the programming of our classes. It is one of the essential aspects to gain the confidence and recognition on the part of our students.

For this purpose, we always try to respect the time of the tide. We chose to schedule most classes for periods of the day that coincide with the low tide and beach areas relatively far from bathers.

Allied to safety is FUN! We want all our students to have fun and enjoy an incredible experience, full of adrenaline and unforgettable moments. But, at the same time, that allows them to become autonomous in the modality and evolve in the technique.

Whether they are at an initiated or advanced level, there is always a moment of EXPERIENCE SHARING. Even though they are not related to sport, they show us different realities and reveal stories that bring us new ideas and teach us something new.

However, nothing is achieved without REQUIREMENT. For this reason, we try to be rigorous in every activity we do, however simple and routine it may seem. And that makes it absolutely gratifying to feel that students recognize the quality of our work.

This is reflected when they schedule new classes whenever they return to Vila Nova de Milfontes, motivated by the desire to learn more and to show how far they have evolved.

In addition, we have always sought to have a pedagogical component in relation to SUSTAINABILITY and the ENVIRONMENT. Our passion for the sea cannot be limited to the hours we spend inside.

It is important to keep the beaches clean and, therefore, we carry out awareness actions and garbage collection on the beaches in conjunction with the Foz do Mira Association. This entity seeks to assume a differentiating role in the lives of local youth.

Experience

Our classes include not only students who are already familiar with the practice of surfing, but also those who have never had any contact with this sport. Above all, we intend to provide experiences that stand out for the difference, capable of winning smiles and immortalizing memories.

Note that the instructors have technical and didactic knowledge that allows the student to evolve quickly and become autonomous at sea. In addition, classes can be taught not only in Portuguese, but also in English, Spanish and German.

This ensures that anyone who visits our village can have the experience of climbing a board for the first time, overcoming the language barrier that often prevents us from trying something new.

The Surf Milfontes Team

We are more than a Surf School, we are Family! Full of people with a strong connection to the land and who have two common characteristics: the passion for the Sea and the willingness to share experiences.

These experiences translate into the desire to want to teach anyone who is willing to venture on a board.

Our instructors started surfing from an early age and have been playing an active role in the school. First as students and now as teachers, being accredited by the Portuguese Surfing Federation.
